Diabetic Eye Exams

Why Diabetic Eye exams?

Patient receiving a diabetic eye exam

ADA Recommended

American Diabetes Association (ADA) strongly recommends regular eye exams for individuals with diabetes. Routine eye examinations are a crucial aspect of diabetes management, aimed at detecting and addressing potential complications related to the eyes, such as diabetic retinopathy.

The ADA recommends that people with diabetes undergo a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. This type of eye exam allows the eye care professional to closely examine the retina and optic nerve, identifying any signs of diabetic retinopathy or other eye conditions associated with diabetes. Early detection and intervention can significantly reduce the risk of vision loss.

More Information

Diabetes can exert a significant impact on eye health, emphasizing the critical need for regular eye examinations for those managing this  condition. Elevated blood sugar levels associated with diabetes can lead  to several complications, particularly affecting the delicate blood vessels in the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy, a common consequence,  involves damage to the retina, potentially leading to vision impairment  or even blindness if left untreated. Moreover, diabetes heightens the risk of developing conditions like glaucoma and cataracts. Regular eye check-ups are imperative for early detection of these issues, allowing for timely intervention and management. Maintaining stable blood sugar levels, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and collaborating closely with healthcare professionals can play a crucial role in preserving long-term eye health for individuals living with diabetes. Awareness and proactive care are key components of safeguarding vision in the face of this complex and pervasive health condition.
